Proton OnSite has been awarded a $1.7 million contract to develop and construct a system to produce hydrogen at an unspecified Hawaii Army post next year.

Proton OnSite, formerly named Proton Energy Systems, received the contract from the U.S. Army’s Tank-Automotive Research, Development and Engineering Center.

The company will build its FuelGen 65 Electrolyzer to produce hydrogen fuel. The Electrolyzer is scheduled to be installed in early 2012, according to a Proton OnSite statement.

A representative for Proton OnSite said the name of the Army post was not known, and a spokesman for the Army could not immediately be reached.

The contract is for the second phase of the company’s project. In November 2008, Proton OnSite received a $1.8 million contract to develop the FuelGen 65 Electrolyzer system, which is capable of producing 65 kilograms of hydrogen per day.

Proton OnSite is a hydrogen energy and innovative gas solutions company based in Wallingford, Conn.
