Mercedes-Benz' investment of about 2 billion euros ($2.79 billion U.S. at the current exchange rate) into fuel-cell technology over the past 15 years can now slowly start to pay off. Mercedes has begun taking orders for its B-Class F-Cell vehicle that will be leased to Californians living in the Los Angeles and San Francisco areas, two regions that have adequate access to hydrogen refueling stations. Lessees will have to dish out $600 to $800 a month for an opportunity to pilot Mercedes' technological marvel, but at least refueling costs are part of the package deal.

Mercedes will lease at least 100 of the B-Class F-Cell four-door hatchbacks in the U.S., but with hydrogen fueling stations few and far between, finding eager customers may prove slightly problematic. Select lessees (5-15 people) who sign up for the Mercedes-Benz' fuel cell vehicle will take delivery of the initial batch of vehicles slated to hit U.S. turf by mid-December. Additional lessees will have to wait until next year when Mercedes ships out more of the fuel-cell hatchbacks. If you're interested in leasing the Mercedes-Benz B-Class F-Cell, and you happen to reside in either of the two areas listed above, then click here to get the process rolling.
