2011 Golden Globes Use Fuel Cell Tech
While Livia Firth will be heating up the red carpet with a sustainable “Peace Silk” gown, organizers for the 68th Annual Golden Globe Awards plan on lighting it with something almost as green.
Fuel cell company Altergy will be teaming up with high-efficiency plasma lighting company Multiquip to provide an eco-friendly shine on celebrities entering the ceremony in Beverly Hills. According to a release, the Globes will also use the system for other unnamed demands (I’m thinking outside camera setups, television monitors, etc.).
Multiquip just announced the release of their new “Fuel Cell Plasma Towers” that offer “a natural, clean light and does not contain any filament” — so I’m thinking that’s what will be at the Globes. While each tower consumes 255W of energy, they also output an impressive 22,000 lumens and last some 50,000 hours. And since fuel cells are clean burning, the only smell will be of the exhaust from limos dropping everyone off.
“This application demonstrates the versatility and range of usages for our Freedom Power fuel-cell systems,” said Eric Metter, Altergy’s president and chief executive officer. “We’ve established a strong base in telecommunications in recent years and the adoption of our clean power systems by the Golden Globe Awards and Oscars shows our ability to provide new and exciting eco-friendly solutions to today’s numerous power demands.”
This same system will be used at the upcoming Screen Actors Guild and Grammy awards and will be in operation at this year’s 83rd Academy Awards program.
