On Thursday April 19th 2012, NASA invited the media to tour its newest and greenest building, Sustainability Base, located at the Ames Research Center, Moffett Field, California.
Sustainability Base was designed to react to changes in sunlight, temperature, wind and occupancy and optimize its performance accordingly. It is presently under consideration for the U.S. Green Building Council's Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Platinum status, the highest LEED rating.
Sustainability Base features a Bloom Energy Box that uses solid oxide fuel cell technology to produce electricity. The facility also has a water recovery system, derived from one originally designed for the International Space Station, which reduces unnecessary consumption of potable water.
